NIVODEK INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

We recommend once you have taken delivery of your decking that it is left for a day before fitting to allow it to acclimatise to the new conditions.

The decking can be installed using normal wood working tools. Safety equipment should also be worn including safety goggles, gloves and dust masks.

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

The substrate should be flat, structurally sound and have a minimum of 6mm per metre slope to allow sufficient drainage to ensure water does not puddle under decking. If used on roof terraces it is important to ensure the felt is watertight and suitable rubber underlay is used as a separating layer. Ensure sufficient wastage is allowed for your project.

CHOOSE YOUR INSTALLATION OPTION

  • OPTION A Decking on composite batten
  • OPTION B Decking on treated batten and cradle system
  • OPTION C Fitting decking on soft ground

OPTION A – Decking on composite batten

Decking instalation step

1 Battens should be laid in a framed layout with staggered joints and spaced at a maximum of 350mm centres. Ensure battens are spaced evenly and are stable ready for the decking installation.

Decking instalation step

2 Fix starter clips to the battens before laying the first row of boards, ensuring a minimum of 15mm gap is left against any abutment to allow sufficient expansion.

Decking instalation step

3 Lay boards in rows and fix using Nivoclips, inserted into the groove and screwed using stainless steel screws. One clip is required for every supporting batten on every board row.

Decking instalation step

4 All header joints should be fully supported on a double batten and each board end is fixed with it’s own Nivoclip where they meet. Ensure a minimum 3mm gap is left on the ends of every decking joint when laying.

Decking instalation step

5 It is recommended that a perimeter frame is installed and fixed to all open edged decking areas to ensure that it is tied into the batten structure.

OPTION B – Decking on treated batten and cradle system

Decking instalation step

1 Nivodek cradles are laid out at a maximum of 350mm centres and at 400mm along the batten and packed to the required height using the Nivodek packers. Nivodek exterior Uc4 treated battens or equal approved should be used on all installations.

Decking instalation step

2 Lay battens in Nivodek cradles with battens staggered and laid with 6mm joint between the end of each batten. Fix starter clips to the battens before laying the first row of boards, ensuring a minimum of 15mm gap is left against any abutment to allow sufficient expansion.

Nivodek can be used on soft ground providing a frame is built and elevated using corner posts cemented into the ground and sufficient intermediate bearers. Joists centres to be as above installation methods.

When layjng on soft ground it is advised to use a weed control membrane.
